Re-running an article from last year because it’s useful….
It’s the day before Halloween; you didn’t go to any parties over the weekend, you weren’t planning on doing anything special tomorrow, so you didn’t think you needed a costume this year. But you’ve just learned that you’re expected to dress up in costume for work tomorrow, and you need an idea right now; something you can put together in a hurry without spending a lot on it. Relax! Your desktop printer can save the day!
There are a lot of costumes that require nothing more than an ID badge, a simple printed (or hand-made) prop, or an iron-on transfer. A quick trip to the nearest office supply store will provide you any of those materials. We’ve even made up a few downloadable pieces of art you can use to pull off your last-minute costume.
Here are a few ideas:
God’s Gift to Men/Women
This is an especially good costume if you want to be the most stylish and best-dressed person in the room. Get all dressed up in your finest evening wear; a suit or tux, fancy evening gown, whatever will make you look spectacular. Tie a big red ribbon and bow around yourself. Make a large gift tag out of card stock. It reads, “To: Men, From: God.” Enjoy the attention!
Find one of those “Hello, My Name is” name tags, and write the name of The Usual Suspects’ mysterious mastermind on it. You’re done.
A vintage-style suit or dress and a handful of home-printed business cards are all you need to become an executive at Sterling Cooper.
Empire Records Employee
One of the key props in Empire Records is the employee name tag hanging from a lanyard; you can see it in the photo to the right on the guy in the orange t-shirt (Mark). Here’s an editable PDF with four tags; each has a blank so you can type in names for yourself and three friends. Just click in the space above “I Work Here” on the name tag. If you have the wardrobe, you can dress as one of the characters; Corey, Gina, Mark, Lucas, Debra and A.J. all have pretty distinctive looks that can be assembled with little effort.
