Tipping: Not a City in China

The topic of tipping was in the news a few weeks ago, due to an incident in which a customer declined to tip a server and then compounded the offense by writing a rude note on the receipt. Another server posted a photo of the receipt online and was fired for it, producing a firestorm of protest online and an epic display of bungled PR on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Don’t Buy “Rich Corinithian Leather” Either!

The opposite of “discount sushi” is “Rich Corinthian Leather.” If you’re an old coot like me, you may remember that back in the day, Ricardo Montalban used to peddle cars for Chrysler; he’d purr in his smooth accent about the “rich Corinthian leather” interior in the new Chrysler Cordoba. No Discount Sushi!

We had to get some car repair done this weekend. A tire blew out, and it turned out to be because the alignment was off. Normally we take our cars to Toshi at JAS in Monrovia (they are very good, extremely honest and charge reasonable rates), but that didn’t work out for us because our Saturday was taken up with archery classes and the shop is not open on Sundays. I suggested getting a tire from one of the hole-in-the-wall places in the sketchy area of town where they sell used tires and “factory seconds” for cheap. My bride responded “isn’t that discount sushi?”

Enterprise Car Rental and the Chevy Traverse

We recently rented a car. Our primary car only seats five people, and we were a group of six heading up to a wedding 75 miles away in the mountains. Taking two cars would mean paying for gas for two cars, plus, we had serious doubts that our second car would make the trip safely and return home intact.

Loews Hollywood Hotel

This week, I was invited to take part in a press event with Disney Animation that included a three-night stay at the Loews Hollywood Hotel. I’ll give the details about the movies and backstage Disney tour in other posts, but for now, let’s focus on the hotel, shall we?
