The Big Wedding

A sure sign that our little blog is starting to gain some traction: in collaboration with Lionsgate Pictures, we are doing a series of articles on DIY weddings, to tie in with promotion of their new film, The Big Wedding. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and the movie looks really good. Before …

Tipping: Not a City in China

The topic of tipping was in the news a few weeks ago, due to an incident in which a customer declined to tip a server and then compounded the offense by writing a rude note on the receipt. Another server posted a photo of the receipt online and was fired for it, producing a firestorm of protest online and an epic display of bungled PR on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

What’s stopping you?

Sometimes when we talk to someone about something fun we’ve done, the other person will say something like “I’ve always wanted to try that.” We hear it all the time when we talk about our archery classes. Scuba divers, skydivers, dancers, actors, artists and writers all hear it over and over. Well, if you’ve always wanted to try it, why haven’t you?

Don’t Buy “Rich Corinithian Leather” Either!

Ricardo Montalban for Chrysler

The opposite of “discount sushi” is “Rich Corinthian Leather.” If you’re an old coot like me, you may remember that back in the day, Ricardo Montalban used to peddle cars for Chrysler; he’d purr in his smooth accent about the “rich Corinthian leather” interior in the new Chrysler Cordoba. Ooooh! That sounds so expensive and stylish, doesn’t it? Have you ever wondered what the heck “Corinthian leather” is?

Whatever Happened to Ice Cream?

Ice cream

In my last post, “Budget the Luxuries First,” I finished off by saying that a good rule for a happy home is to own an ice cream maker. I have since come to learn it’s more than a good idea, it’s an absolute necessity, since apparently commercial ice cream no longer exists.

“Budget the Luxuries First!”

Chelsea and Sean's wedding

We attended a wedding recently, and one of the things that always happens at wedding receptions is the inevitable offering of advice to the newlyweds; whether it’s in the form of a toast by the Best Man, or somebody running around with a video camera at the reception asking people to say a few words, or the goofy uncle who wanders over to the couple and puts in his two cents, it’s going to happen.

David Byrne & St. Vincent at the Greek

Greek Theatre

The other day, my bride and co-conspirator at this site informed me that she had won concert tickets; we were to see David Byrne and St. Vincent at the Greek Theatre (the venue where Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Night” and Harry Chapin’s “Greatest Stories Live” albums were recorded) on Saturday night, thanks to local radio station The Sound LA (100.3 on your FM dial).

“I Can’t Afford That!”

lexus

One of the things we hear from friends, when we talk about concerts or museums or plays, is questions about how we can afford to do these things. It’s not that difficult. There are a lot of ways to see and do things that don’t cost a lot but are fun and interesting.
