Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

We had a request this week to share the recipe for our favorite Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins which came to us several years ago from http://www.joyofbaking.com/muffins/PumpkinChocolateChipMuffins.html. Delicious all year long, but especially in the fall, I made half of this batch with chocolate chips and the other half with white chips. 1- 1/2 cups all purpose …

Recycle an Old Costume

What else do you have tucked away in your closet from past Halloweens? Have you been involved in theater productions, LARPing, SCA, theme weddings, science fiction/fantasy conventions or Renaissance Faires? You may have the raw material for a new costume. Renaissance Faire Costume Unless you were a noble, the style of clothing changed very little …

Slow Cooker Potato Leek Soup

There are few things in the world that are as personally satisfying, as coming home to a meal you prepared using the crockpot. Now, I’ve cooked some impressive meals I’ve been very proud of including my Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas prime rib and perfect-for-every- occasion-chocolate mousse. But when I successfully set up the slow cooker, I …

Regret-Free Shopping? It’s a Mystery!

My lovely new necklace. I may be traveling back east next month for a business meeting and will be trading my usual work uniform of pajamas (working at home) or jeans and tees (archery range) for something a little more appropriate for east coast corporate. I wanted something bright and cheerful that would add a …

Best Blueberry Muffins

Blueberries were on sale last week, so of course I bought some. Finding myself with an abundance of berries, I pulled out this wonderful recipe from my copy of the Vincent Price Cookbook © 1965 which I inherited from my mother. Price was known not only for his films, which ranged from the 1944 noir …

Fabulous Summertime Beverage: White Wine Sangria

The very first note in my phone is a list of ingredients for a white wine sangria made by a Pasadena restaurant, Café Santorini: Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Peach Schnapps. The fruits that were used that night were honeydew, pineapple, cherries and lime. The waiter described how the restaurant prepared their sangria on Friday …

Tea Time

I follow all my local papers on Facebook and an interesting item caught my eye on the Pasadena Patch page. On June 10, the Langham Hotel in Pasadena is celebrating the opening of the first Langham Hotel in London, England in 1865 by serving their Tiffin Afternoon Tea for its original price of 1 shilling, …

Descoware

When we visit thrift stores, my husband tends to spend most of his time browsing the electronics, gadgets, knick-knacks and other dust-catchers while I’m looking at clothes. (His helpful tip for today is to always take a look at the kitchen section of the Goodwill; the things you find there are almost always items you …

Finding My Joy

At last I can say I truly have joy. Joy of Cooking, that is. One of the best-selling cookbooks of all time, yet I never had my own copy. Still wearing its $35.00 price sticker from Williams-Sonoma, I found it at my local Goodwill for $5.99. The Joy of Cooking was first published in 1936 …

Soak Away Stress

I had a long difficult day this week. Nothing really terrible happened, but I didn’t sleep well the night before, and started the day feeling tired and cranky. Then the car broke down in the rain and I missed an appointment. A work project took way too long and threw off the rest of the day. I stepped on the scale (it went up instead of down), dealt with a nagging injury, felt bad for being inconsistent with this blog and that led to feeling guilty about messiness, and general feelings of frustration and disorganization. You know how these things build up. I went to Target to buy laundry detergent and cleaning things that are absolutely not fun and found a dollar bin item that cheered me up and inspired me to take a time out and put things into perspective. A cute $1.00 bath pillow and appropriately, it looks like a life preserver.
